Peace Corps first opened in Rwanda in 1974, paused operations in 1994, and resumed in 2008. Today, volunteers work in Health and TEFL Education, directly supporting Rwanda’s national priorities.
We are seeking a dedicated, collaborative, and proactive professional to join our team as the Homestay, Language & Culture Coordinator (HLCC).
Position Overview
Reporting to the Training Manager (TM), the HLCC ensures Peace Corps Trainees (PCTs) have a safe, supportive, and culturally enriching experience during Pre-Service Training (PST). The HLCC oversees:
- Homestay Program: Placement, supervision, and integration of host families.
- Language & Cultural Training: Coordination and guidance for Language and Cross-Culture Facilitators (LCFs) to deliver high-quality Kinyarwanda instruction and cultural orientation.
This role ensures both the homestay program and language training operate smoothly and effectively. (Intermittent position.)
Key Responsibilities
Homestay Coordination
- Identify, prepare, and evaluate host families in collaboration with TM, ATML, and Safety & Security Manager (SSM).
- Facilitate host family integration into cross-cultural training programs.
- Resolve conflicts between trainees, families, or community members promptly.
- Monitor trainee well-being and cultural immersion in host families.
- Submit host family evaluations and information to the Volunteer Information Database Application (VIDA).
Language & Cultural Training
- Organize all language and cross-cultural components of Training of Trainers (TOT).
- Work with trainees to develop essential cross-cultural competencies.
- Support LCFs in integrating PACA concepts, technical vocabulary, and cultural content into lessons.
- Co-facilitate sessions as needed, providing feedback and maintaining a Lesson Plan Book for inclusion in the Peace Corps Rwanda curriculum.
- Track trainee progress through weekly reports and proficiency checks.
LCF Coordination
- Supervise, mentor, and support LCFs throughout PST.
- Conduct regular observations, provide constructive feedback, and guide session preparation.
- Collaborate with TM on performance evaluations and training improvements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree (Education, Social Sciences, Community Development, or related field preferred).
- Experience: 4+ years in teaching, training, program coordination, or cultural exchange programs.
- Skills:
- Strong cross-cultural communication and organizational skills
- Deep knowledge of Rwandan culture and Kinyarwanda
- Fluent in English and Kinyarwanda (spoken and written)
- Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
- Abilities:
- Manage multiple tasks and coordinate team activities effectively
- Mentor staff and support adult learners
- Foster cultural sensitivity and understanding
