Vacancy Announcement: Health Education Officer

Country Program Overview

Alight Rwanda, formerly known as the American Refugee Committee, has played a vital role in humanitarian response in Rwanda since 1994. The organization operates in all five refugee camps in Rwanda, delivering integrated services in:

Alight Rwanda is also known for pioneering innovative initiatives such as the SASA! methodology, which promotes gender equality, prevents gender-based violence, and empowers vulnerable communities.

Through innovation and strong partnerships, the organization continues to deliver impactful humanitarian programs that strengthen both refugee and host communities.


Position: Health Education Officer

The Health Education Officer will lead and coordinate community health education initiatives aimed at improving health awareness and promoting healthy behaviors in humanitarian settings.

The role focuses particularly on supervising and strengthening the capacity of Community Health Workers (CHWs) to ensure effective delivery of life-saving health information to communities.


Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be responsible for:

Community Health Education

  • Leading and coordinating community health promotion activities alongside health and protection teams.
  • Designing and implementing effective health education strategies.

Supervision of Community Health Workers

  • Supervising, mentoring, and training Community Health Workers (CHWs).
  • Conducting regular field visits and coaching sessions to monitor CHW performance.
  • Providing continuous feedback and performance reviews.

Community Engagement

  • Organizing community dialogues, outreach activities, and focus group discussions.
  • Promoting awareness on key health topics such as:
    • Hygiene and sanitation
    • Maternal and child health
    • Nutrition
    • Disease prevention
    • Gender-based violence prevention

Health Communication

  • Developing culturally appropriate Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials.
  • Delivering clear and accessible health messages to communities.

Monitoring and Reporting

  • Collaborating with the Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) team to collect and analyze health data.
  • Preparing detailed reports on community health activities and CHW performance.
  • Tracking community health trends and identifying emerging needs.

Coordination and Compliance

  • Working with local leaders and community structures to ensure community participation.
  • Ensuring activities align with national health policies and donor requirements.
  • Supporting emergency health communication during disease outbreaks.


Required Competencies

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Experience delivering community health education sessions
  • Strong documentation and reporting skills
  • Fluency in English and Kinyarwanda (spoken and written)
  • Ability to work effectively in high-pressure humanitarian environments

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in:
    • Public Health
    • Community Health
    • Health Education
    • Or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in:
    • Health promotion
    • Community mobilization
    • Public health programming
  • Previous experience supervising Community Health Workers (CHWs) is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with Rwanda’s national community health strategies will be an added advantage.
