Job Purpose

The Environmental Protection Specialist will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with Rwanda’s environmental regulations and industry standards. The successful candidate will oversee environmental monitoring programs, coordinate government inspections, manage compliance reporting, and support sustainable mining operations.

This position is ideal for professionals passionate about environmental stewardship, risk management, and sustainable development within the extractive industry.


Key Responsibilities

Environmental Compliance Management

  • Monitor mining operations to ensure compliance with national environmental laws and regulations.
  • Implement environmental protection strategies and sustainability initiatives.
  • Oversee wastewater, waste gas, and solid waste management systems.
  • Ensure environmental control measures are effectively maintained and improved.
  • Support environmental audits and regulatory assessments.

Government Relations and Regulatory Liaison

  • Coordinate with environmental authorities and government regulatory agencies.
  • Facilitate environmental inspections and compliance evaluations.
  • Prepare and submit required environmental reports and documentation.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between regulators and company management.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with government stakeholders.

Environmental Monitoring and Risk Assessment

  • Conduct routine environmental inspections throughout mining sites.
  • Identify environmental risks, hazards, and compliance gaps.
  • Recommend corrective and preventive measures to minimize environmental impacts.
  • Track environmental performance indicators and compliance metrics.
  • Support environmental incident investigations and reporting.

Sustainability and Operational Support

  • Advise management on environmental best practices and compliance requirements.
  • Promote sustainable mining and resource management initiatives.
  • Support workplace health, safety, and environmental (HSE) programs.
  • Assist in developing environmental policies and operational procedures.
  • Contribute to corporate sustainability and ESG objectives.

Required Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Associate Degree, Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree, or higher qualification in:
    • Environmental Engineering
    • Environmental Science
    • Safety Engineering
    • Mining Engineering
    • Natural Resource Management
    • Environmental Management
    • Or a closely related field

Professional Experience

Candidates must demonstrate:

  • Minimum of 2–3 years of relevant experience in environmental protection, environmental compliance, mining operations, industrial safety, or sustainability management.
  • Proven experience working within mining, construction, manufacturing, energy, or other heavy industries.
  • Strong understanding of Rwanda’s environmental regulations and compliance frameworks.
  • Experience interacting with government agencies and regulatory authorities.
  • Knowledge of environmental impact management and monitoring systems.
